How much does it cost to rent Seldom Seen Retreat?
CAN $2,300 per week (June – September)


Is it cheaper to rent by the month?
Yes. We offer discounts for 2 week, 3 week and month long rentals. We also have discounted prices from October to May.

 

Where is Seldom Seen Retreat?
A five minute drive from Schomberg, in King Township, Ontario. Schomberg is located at Hwy. #27 and Hwy. #9, 5 minutes West of Hwy. #400. We will provide you with an accurate map when you make your reservation.

How long does it take to drive there from downtown Toronto?
Less than 1 hour, depending on traffic.


How long does it take to drive there from Pearson International Airport?
Half an hour.


Is it long distance to call Toronto?
No, which makes Seldom Seen Retreat an ideal location to escape to, while keeping in touch with the outside world. Cellular telephone companies provide service in our area as well.


How far away is the local supermarket?
There is a giant IGA in the Brownsville Junction shopping mall, a 5 minute drive away. It’s located just outside of Schomberg, on Hwy. #27, 1/2 km south of Hwy. #9. It also has a pharmacy, a liquor store (LCBO), a beer store and a Home Hardware.


Is there a good butcher nearby?
Yes. Schomberg Meats on Main St.


Can we buy any organic meat raised locally?
Yes. We raise sheep on our organic farm, which is adjacent to Seldom Seen Retreat. Please visit our organic lamb website to find out more!

 

How far away is the local farmers’ market?
There are several farmers’ markets only a 10 minute drive East along Highway 9, alongside the Holland Marsh, just West of Hwy.#400. We also recommend “Round the Bend” farm, on Aurora Rd., just East and South of Hwy.#400. There are also farmers' markets in Newmarket, North York, Markham, Orangeville, and Streetsville - you'll find a complete list in the Links and Local Attractions page.


Where’s the nearest shopping mall?
Newmarket and Bolton both have several. Bolton is a 15 minute drive, and Newmarket is 20 minutes away. The biggest is the Upper Canada Mall in Newmarket.


Are there any antique stores nearby?

Yes. The closest is in Schomberg. See the Links and Local Attractions page for a complete list.


Is there a TV with a VCR in the house?
Yes


Do you have cable or satellite TV?
No. We have a great library though. You can also rent movies nearby.


How far away is the nearest multiplex or drive-in?
20 minutes to the Silvercity in Newmarket and the North York Drive-in. Check out the Local Cinemas and Drive-ins Links page to find out more.


Where is the nearest video rental store?

Schomberg’s Becker’s store rents videos. They’re at the South end of Main St.


Are there any golf courses near by?

Can we visit a local farm?

Are there riding stables nearby?

Are there any good museums or art galleries nearby?
Absolutely. If you like Canadian Art by the Group of Seven, you'll love the Fred Varley Gallery in Unionville, and the world famous McMicheal Canadian Art Collection in Kleinberg (20 minutes away). Then there's the Base Borden Military Museum due West of Barrie, the Simcoe County Museum just North West of Barrie, Black Creek Pioneer Village at the top of Toronto, and Georgina Pioneer Village in Keswick. How far are away is the South Simcoe Steam Train?

How many trails are there to walk?
At last count there were 15 different trails, covering more than 25 kilometres.


How large and how deep is the lake?

16 acres in area, 60 feet deep.


Can we bring our fishing rods?
Yes, please do. You can catch perch, catfish, sunfish, and try for the legendary 3 foot pike. There are always fresh worms available in the soft soil in the shadow of the boathouse.

Can we bring our boat / Seadoo / kayak / canoe?
Sorry, but we have to keep our lake and the surrounding waterways free of zebra mussels, so we have a strict no (outside) boat policy. We have also never allowed motorized watercraft in the lake, to keep it free from pollution. We have a sailboat and a rowboat (a Nova Scotian Dory), and 2 canoes that our guests are free to use. Life preservers are mandatory and are also provided.

Can we bring our ATV, Motorcross, trail bike or mountain bike?
No. Seldom Seen Retreat is located on a nature preserve, and recreational motorized vehicles and mountain bikes are not permitted.

Is hunting allowed?
No, and no weapons of any kind are permitted on our land. All of our property boundaries are clearly marked to keep other hunters and trespassers away, which makes our meadows, orchards, fields and forests safe for all creatures.

Can we roast marshmallows around a campfire?
Absolutely. There is a fire pit with log seats at the lake’s edge, and plenty of firewood to burn.


What kind of sports equipment would you suggest we bring?
Bathing suits, tennis racquets, baseballs, gloves and bats, a basketball (for the practice wall in the tennis court), kites, frisbees, hacky sacs, beach toys, hiking shoes, binoculars, cameras and video cameras (for all the wildlife).


Can we bring our pets?
Sorry, but in consideration for our guest who are allergic to animals, we do not allow any pets in the house. And because Seldom Seen Retreat is located on a nature preserve, we want to allow our guest to enjoy the property while minimizing the impact on the environment.
