Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the rental rate/week?  Our rental rate for the peak season (June – September, Thanksgiving, Easter, March Break & Christmas) is $2400/week.  At other times of the year, a one week rental is $2000/week.
  • Is a deposit required?  What forms of payment do you accept?  Yes, please a 50% deposit is required upon booking and the balance due the week prior to your stay. At this time we can only accept cheques or money orders in CDN funds or cash.
  • What is the minimum rental period?  Can I rent for a weekend? We have a minimum rental of one week.  Weekend rentals are not available.
  • Is there a maximum rental period?  No. The retreat can be rented for a few weeks or a month at a time dependent on availability.
  • Is the retreat available for rent year round?  Yes!  The retreat is magical at every time of year.  A/C in summer and central heating combined with gas and wood fireplaces make the house comfy at all times of year.  There is much to do on the property and in the local area in every season.
  • Are there any other houses on the property?  Will I have privacy?  Yes, there is one other house on the main property, Seldom Heard, that shares part of the entrance lane way.  You cannot see it from Seldom Seen, but can see it from the lake.  This house is primarily used by the family.  There are also two other houses with their own entrances.  These two houses are attached to the 100 acre organic farm we run a little way up the street.  You will find Seldom Seen to be very private.  In the summer, you may on occasion encounter company at the lake, or rarely in passing on a trail, but there are two docks and ample space for everyone to find their own space or you can socialize if you wish.
  • What activities are there on the property?  There is a tennis court right out side the house which also hosts a basketball net, a 16 acre kettle lake to swim in (or skate on in winter), a small sailboat and canoe for lake adventures, many km’s of trails to explore (wonderful for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in winter), large open areas for family games of soccer or frisbee.  In the house you will find a tuned piano, a wonderful and eclectic selection of books and a small selection of board games and cards. We have a small assortment of rackets and balls for you to use.
  • Is there a T.V.? DVD?  No.  Sorry…there is no t.v., cable or satellite at the retreat.
  • Is there internet service?  Yes! We have high-speed internet available as a courtesy to our guests.  However; this is a mobile device available for your convenience for browsing/emails etc… Downloads/uploads if necessary will be billed to you.
  • Is there a phone?  Long-distance service?  Yes.  There is a phone in the house that permits long distance calling.  It is a 905- area code, but calling to Toronto is local.  We suggest that you use a calling card or credit card to make long distance calls as you will be billed for any long-distance calls during your stay.
  • Will my cell phone work at the house?  Yes, we get good cell phone coverage from most major cellular companies in the house and throughout most of the property, including by the lake.
  • Do you provide meal service?  Are you a B&B?  No, sorry, we are not a B&B and do not provide meals.  There is a nicely equipped kitchen for you to prepare your meals and two full size fridges.  There is also a large gas BBQ outside the kitchen door.  We have an herb garden that we encourage you to take advantage of for fresh herbs.  Schomberg has a newly renovated foodland and in summer there is a wonderful farmers market every other Saturday where you can find locally grown produce, fresh breads and yummy treats.
  • We really don’t want to prepare all our meals…are there any local caterers?  Yes!  We have worked with some fabulous local caterers and we’d be happy to make some recommendations to you.
  • What kind of local services are available? Groceries? LCBO/Beer? Pharmacy? Restaurants? Take-out? The village of Schomberg is just a 4 minute drive away and you will find most basic amenities (groceries, wine/liquor/beer, dry cleaners, gas/diesel, pharmacy and a nice assortment of eat in and take out restaurants right in Schomberg.  For a more complete list of services and links to local menus etc… click here.
  • What local attractions are there for day trips or outings?  Seldom Seen is conveniently located less than an hour north of Toronto, making trips to the city to visit the new Ripley’s Aquarium, the CN Tower, the ROM, a Blue Jays or Leafs Game or anything else Toronto has to offer very reasonable.  There is also much to do in the local area.  Click here to see some ideas.
  • Do you provide bed linens/towels?  Yes.  We have lots of linens.  When you arrive you will find fresh bed linens on all beds and a large quantity of fresh towels.
  • Is there laundry in the house?  Yes, there is a washer and a dryer available to you for your convenience.
  • We want to have friends and family over for a big dinner; are there enough dishes/cutlery?  Yes, we have lots of dishes and cutlery and glassware!
  • Are motorized vehicles allowed on your trails?  I want to bring my ATV/snowmobile.  Sorry, no.  Any snowmobiles or ATVs you see or hear on the trails during your stay are being operated by owners/staff to perform work and rest assured that your safety and enjoyment are always a consideration.  There are; however, great snowmobiling trails close by, so let us know if you want to bring yours and we’ll help you discover some of the local trail access points.
  • Is smoking permitted in the house?  NO.  Please absolutely no smoking in the house or the gazebo.
  • Are pets allowed?  While we recommend that you leave your pets at home; we understand that the family pet is an integral part of a family holiday.  Well behaved, housetrained pets may be permitted.  Please contact us if you wish to bring your pet with you.  A damage deposit and additional cleaning fee will be required.
  • I would like to have my wedding/party/celebration at Seldom Seen.  Is that possible?  Seldom Seen is a unique and private venue for an intimate outdoor wedding or celebration for up to a maximum of 50 guests (no exceptions).  We do not have tents or other rentals but can assist you with arranging these if required.  Please contact us to discuss.  There is a minimum 10 day rental of the house required for any event requiring installation of a party tent/generator.
